Each year we see drownings in our local headlines. Thankfully at the Y, we have seen our pools full of children learning how to swim, as well as teens and adults, to combat this issue.
The Y is “America’s Swim Instructor” and our Swim Academy swim lessons help each swimmer progress at their own pace. Our swim programs offer the area’s very best in water safety education and recreation, with swim lessons for everyone, infants to adults. Swim Academy helps swimmers meet their goals, whether they are looking to learn to swim for enjoyment, to learn to be safe around water or work towards swimming competitively. Our parent-child swim program, Power Aquatics, for children infant to age 5 is sold out each session and feeds into our Swim Academy Lessons – which are also sold out.
Tiffany, a long-time South Shore YMCA member, registered her children for Power Aquatics this past year to help them gain independence and confidence when swimming. As Tiffany participated in the parent-child classes with her own children, she found herself trying to help her child learn to swim while now knowing how to swim herself.
“Swim was something I never thought was achievable for me as an adult,” says Tiffany, “I thought I was past my bandwidth to learn, especially being afraid of the water”. Through the support she received at the Y, Tiffany was able to take the next step in her swim journey, overcoming her fears and discovering a new passion for swimming.
