When you hear the word “Camp,” what do you think of? For most, it conjures up images of days spent hiking and exploring in the sunshine, and evenings full of stories and s’mores huddled up around the campfire. But challenge yourself to think of Camp more broadly – not as an activity that happens every summer, but as a destination.
Resident Camps here on the South Shore and throughout New England have much to offer, no matter the season. As summer winds down, vibrant autumn colors can make for an exciting trip for leaf peepers looking to take in the fall scenery. One example of this year-round Camp destination is The South Shore YMCA’s Camp Burgess & Hayward. Located on Cape Cod just one hour south of Boston in the historic town of Sandwich, Camp B&H is so much more than summer camp. The Camp Burgess Outdoor Education and Retreat Center, for example, aims to develop conscientious citizens by cultivating community through its interactive outdoor experiences. Programs can be customized to fit groups ranging from small to large, and from young to young at heart.
For those looking to take in the sights of fall while getting fit, Camp Burgess & Hayward will host an annual Fall Festival & Scenic 5K Trail Run-Walk on Sunday, October 28. The unique 5K trail run-walk is ideal for the seasoned trail runner/walker looking for a new challenge, a road runner/walker searching for a change of pace and scenery – and, anyone seeking the chance to get out and embrace nature at a leisurely pace! Check out www.campburgessandhayward.com/blog for information on how to sign up, and don’t forget to bring your binoculars!
Beyond the Camp’s borders in Sandwich, those looking to experience Camp here on the South Shore are invited to join Camp B&H staff and alumni for a special evening commemorating the 90th anniversary of Camp Burgess at Hingham Beer Works. Proceeds from this event, which will take place from 5:30 – 8:00 pm on Thursday, November 1, will directly support the South Shore YMCA’s 2018 Annual Campaign’s Campership Fund and critical capital improvement projects, which helps ensure that all children can experience Camp Burgess & Hayward now and in the future.
